The French and Francophone Studies minor allows students to explore their interests in French and Francophone language and culture in a highly flexible program of study. Students in this minor program will develop their ability to communicate in French as well as their knowledge of Francophone topics of personal interest as they complete the minor coursework.

 

 

Requirements

The French and Francophone Studies minor requires students to take and pass a total of 18 credit hours or 6 classes of upper-division French with a grade of “C” or better.

  • Upper-division classes are those classes with course numbers of 3000+
  • Students who have no prior knowledge of French can graduate with a French and Francophone Studies minor in four years.
  • Students who have previous knowledge of the language from High School, AP, or IB classes may be able to bypass the Elementary and Intermediate-level courses and enroll in Advanced classes, depending on their years of experience and test results.
  • Experienced French students, including native or heritage speakers of French, should contact the Undergraduate Program Coordinator, Dr. Elizabeth Giltner, to discuss their language learning experience, to determine which course they should enroll in, and to determine their individual program of study.

Core Courses

French and Francophone Studies minors must take and pass 6 credit hours or 2 core classes of upper-division French with a grade of “C” or better. The courses designated as core classes are:

  1. FRE 3420 or FRE 4422 – French Composition or Advanced French Composition
  2. FRE 3760 or FRE 4421 – Advanced French Oral Communication or Advanced French Conversation

Notes:

  • FRE 3420 is not a prerequisite for FRE 4422
  • FRE 3760 is not a prerequisite for FRE 4421
  • FRE 3420 is offered in even Fall semesters (Fall 2022, 2024, etc.)
  • FRE 4422 is offered in odd Fall semesters (Fall 2023, 2025, etc.)
  • FRE 3760 is offered in odd Spring semesters (Spring 2023, 2025, etc.)
  • FRE 4422 is offered in even Spring semesters (Spring 2024, 2026, etc.)

Elective Courses

In addition to the core courses, French and Francophone Studies minors must take and pass 12 credit hours or 4 elective classes of upper-division French with a grade of “C” or better. Elective course offerings will vary from semester to semester.
